Finding yourself in the archives

As the archive of government over the last millennium, The National Archives’ collections tell the stories of people from across the world and of the diverse communities in Britain.

The National Archives’ Outreach team are specialists in using archives creatively during community outreach activities. A recent project in London and Bristol worked with elders from the Windrush generation to reflect on archival records and capture personal and community memories.

The Trust aims to support projects that build relationships with local archives, enhance wellbeing for people and allow lived experiences to contribute to our understanding of history. With additional funding, future initiatives would include work with diaspora communities to share their stories of the Second World War, plus creative projects which draw inspiration from archives to produce audio plays, shedding light on previously marginalised histories.
